FOR SALE, eggs HEMILEUCA TRICOLOR

Ad type
FOR SALE
Description
EGGS of HEMILEUCA TRICOLOR. A spring-emerging Hemileuca from the deserts of southwestern North America. Eggs are deposited as egg rings in the spring and hatch during cooler and humid conditions of the summer rainy season--June-July. Larvae mature in September-October. Unlike several other desert Hemileuca, the larvae prefer leaves rather than flowers and are much easier to rear. In addition, being summer active, the larvae can tolerate some moisture and humidity. The larvae are intensely gregarious and are capable of delivering a nasty sting. Not a species for beginners.
HOSTPLANTS : a variety of legumes Acacia, Mimosa, Prosopis, Havardia, Cercidium, Parkinsonia, etc (Fabaceae) but also ocotillo (Fouquieria). A number of species that feed on Fouquieria will feed on Ligustrum or Rosaceae in captivity. Otherwise, try black locust (Robinia), Acacia, honey locust (Gleditsia), pink floss tree (Albizia), lead ball tree (Leucaena), plume acacia (Paraserianthes), or other Fabaceae.
