Ad type
FOR SALE
Description

COCOONS of AGAPEMA ANONA. LAST CHANCE for 2020 of this rarely offered moth. Beautiful little silk moths from the deserts of southwestern North America. Moths will be emerging in a few weeks (late October-November). Eggs are laid in groups and overwinter and hatch during the following spring. Larvae mature in April-June and spin beautiful net-like white, golden, brown or even pink, double-walled cocoons in groups among the spiny tangles of their host plant's stems. True desert insects, the eggs and cocoons can tolerate intense heat, drought and bitter cold.

HOSTPLANTS : only Condalia (Rhamnaceae) in nature, so far as is known. There are reports that larvae will accept mountain lilac or New Jersey tea (Ceanothus spp.), Chinese date or jujube (Ziziphus), and perhaps the buckthorns (Rhamnus & Frangula)-- including the seriously invasive species -- all in the Rhamnaceae.
